NEW DELHI: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has announced the 32-member Indian athletics team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Glasgow. The squad includes top stars as well as young talents. India has filled its complete quota with 22 male athletes and 10 female athletes selected for the final team.
The team was announced during a virtual press conference held on Sunday by World Athletics Vice-President and former AFI President Adille Sumariwalla. He said the team was selected according to the selection policy announced by the federation earlier. Performances of athletes competing abroad with prior approval were also considered during the selection process.
Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra is the biggest attraction in the squad. However, his participation will be confirmed only after he completes the qualification requirements set for the Games. According to the Chief Selection Committee’s decision, Neeraj Chopra and triple jump athlete Selva Prabhu have been included in the team with certain conditions. Their performances in upcoming international events and the Inter-State Meet before the Commonwealth Games will be reviewed before taking a final decision on their participation. The federation expects Selva Prabhu, who is an NCAA athlete in the USA, and Neeraj, who is set to return to international competitions after recovering from injury, to meet the required qualification standards.
